Khyber Pakhtunkhwa clinched Under-16 Under and Boys Under-17 Inter-Provincial Badminton Championship played here at Tariq Wadood Indoor Hall on Friday.
Additional Secretary Sports Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Naeem Anwar was the chief guest on this occasion and before the start of the two finals – girls and boys – the players were introduced to him. Secretary Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Badminton Association Haji Amjad Khan, Organizing Secretary Syed Sadaqat Shah, officials, players and spectators were also present.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa defeated Punjab in the Girls Under-16 Championship by winning the event for the fourth time, three in a row, and after a runners-up position last year in Abbottabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa got the winner trophy by defeating strong Punjab team.
In the meantime, the Boys of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa retained the Boys Under-17 title for the fifth consecutive year after recording victory against Punjab in the grand final.
In the girls Under-16 final Khyber Pakhtunkhwa?s Arifa recorded victory against top seeded Zainab in a marathon five sets battle, the score was 23-21, 21-23, 21-19, 18-21 and 21-16. Arifa gave a stunning performance against her strong rival Zainab with some fine cross-court smashes, overhead smashes and excellent services were also witnessed.
In the doubles Arifa and Malika defeated Punjab?s Maryum and Kiran by 3-0, the score was 21-19, 21-17 and 21-19 while in the last singles unseeded Urooj outclassed Punjab?s top seed Maryum by 3-1, the score was 23-21, 21-18, 15-21 and 21-17.
For the third position Islamabad beat Sindh by 3-0 and got third position. In the Boys Under-17 final Khyber Pakhtunkhwa defeated strong Punjab team and retained the title for the fifth consecutive times including a hat-trick. In the first singles Shoaib Riaz defeated Ahmad Hassan by 3-0, the score was 21-19, 21-17 and 21-19 while in the doubles Shoaib Riaz and the current national Under-14 Champion Hamza Khan beat Sarmad and Ahmad Hassan by 3-1, the score was 23-21, 21-17, 21-17 and 21-19 while in the last and decisive set, Zohaib, who recently played for Pakistan in Bangkok and reached to the quarter-finals there, defeated top seed of Punjab Sarmad in the marathon five sets battle, the score was 23-21, 15-21, 17-21, 21-19 and 23-21.
In the Boys event, FATA for the first time in the history defeated Sindh by 3-0 and got third position. Director Sports FATA Ayaz Khan was also present on this occasion and supported his team with coach Ayub Khan.
At the end, the chief guest gave way trophies, cash prizes and certificates to the winners and other position holders. Arifa was given Rs. 15000 cash prize on behalf of the Directorate of Sports Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The boys winners also awarded Rs. 15000.
