Hyderabad Sunrisers (SRH) elbowed out Delhi Daredevils from the jostle for playoffs spot in the Indian Premier League last night. They defeated Daredevils by six runs in a hard-fought match in Raipur. SRH moved to the fourth place at the points table, while DD found themselves out of contention in the playoffs fight.
Sunrisers won the toss and decided to bat first. They did not have the best of starts. Zaheer Khan and Nathan Coulter Nile reduced them to 31 for two in the fifth over. Both their heavy scorers – David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan – were back in the hut.
Moises Henriques steadied the innings with vital partnerships with Eoin Morgan, Karn Sharm and Ravi Bopara. Henriques remained unbeaten on a 46-ball 74, in which he hit five sixes and a four. SRH finished with 163 for four, after scoring 64 runs in the last five overs.
Quinton de Kock scored almost all of the runs at the start of the chase for Daredevils. He scored 50 of 31 balls. When he got out in the second ball of the ninth over, the team total was 60 for two. DD found scoring difficult after his dismissal and lost wickets of JP Duminy and Yuvraj Singh in quick succession.
Kedhar Jadhav and Saurabh Tiwary then produced an unbeaten partnership that almost won the match for Daredevils. Jadhav scored 63 off 34 balls and Tiwary scored 26 off 25 balls. They needed 60 runs off the last five overs. Jadhav took 22 runs in the 16th over and nine runs in the 17th over. All they needed was 29 runs from 18 balls.
Ishant Sharma gave away just seven runs in the 18th over and Bhuvneshwar Kumar allowed only six runs in the 19th over. Daredevils needed 16 runs in the final over. They could score just nine runs off Ishant Sharma in the final over. It was a valiant effort by the Indian batters. But Albie Morkel was waiting for his turn to bat in the dug-out when all these were happening.
Daredevils lost yet another close match and exited from the playoffs race. Moises Henriques is the man of the match.
